What is Microneedling

Also sometimes known as collagen induction therapy. Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a device with fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process, promoting the production of collagen and elastin. Here are some key considerations for safely performing microneedling at home

Preparation

  1. Choose the Right Device:
    • Derma Stamps & Derma Rollers: Typically used for beginners, they come with different needle lengths. For at-home use, it is recommended to start with a needle length of 0.25mm to 0.5mm.
    • Microneedling Pens: Dr.Pen devices offer more precision and can be adjusted to different speeds and needle lengths. For at-home use, it is recommended to start with a needle length of 0.25mm to 0.5mm.
  2. Sterilization:
    • Always sterilize the device before and after use with alcohol or a similar disinfectant to prevent infections.
  3. Skin Preparation:
    • Cleanse your face thoroughly with a gentle cleanser to remove all makeup, dirt, and oil.
    • Apply a numbing cream if you have a low pain threshold (optional).
  4. Set Your Speed & Depth: Always start on the lowest speed and depth setting. You can gradually build it up as you get to know your Dr.Pen microneedling system.

Procedure

  1. Technique:
    • Apply your chosen serum to the skin then glide the device over your skin in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal directions. Make sure to apply even, gentle pressure.
    • Focus on one area at a time, covering the entire face systematically.
  2. Duration:
    • Spend about 2-3 minutes on each section of your face. Avoid overdoing it to prevent skin damage.
  3. Post-Treatment Care:
    • Apply a soothing serum like Medisco Hyaluronic Acid (specially formulated for microneedling) or a sheet mask to hydrate and calm the skin.
    • Use a specially formulated repair cream like Stayve vegan Repair cream for the first 3-4 days – this will help to ensure your skin is nourished and you get the best results from microneedling.
    • Avoid using active ingredients like pure retinoids, vitamin C, or acids for at least 5 days post-treatment.
    • Protect your skin from the sun with a high SPF sunscreen, as microneedling can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.

Frequency

If using a Dr.Pen microneedling system you should space your treatments out every 4-6 weeks. Longer needles (0.75mm and above) should be used less frequently, about once every 6-8 weeks. These lengths and above are generally recommended to be used by professionals.

You can use a derma stamp a little more regularly as this method tends to not be as invasive.

Risks and Precautions

  • Infection: Always use sterilized equipment to prevent bacterial infections.
  • Skin Irritation: Redness, swelling, and slight bruising are common and should subside within a few days.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Improper technique or using needles that are too long can cause pigmentation issues, especially in darker skin tones.

Contraindications

  • Active acne, eczema, or psoriasis
  • Keloid scarring
  • Severe rosacea
  • Open wounds or skin infections

Using a serum

At Dr.Pen UK we stock a wide range of serum ampoules that are specifically manufactured for use during microneedling. Its important to use a good quality serum on your skin whilst microneedling as those little channels that your creating help the serum really penetrate the skin. A couple of our current favourites are:

  • Stayve Aqua Stem Cell – great for locking in moisture and for moisturising dry skin through the various plant extracts. It protects the skin from external harmful environment and also improves the skin texture.
  • Stayve Salmon Gold – The best selling serum due to its regenerative ingredients. Improving skins firmness and reducing wrinkle appearance.

Summary

While microneedling with Dr. Pen at home can be effective for maintaining and improving skin health, it is essential to follow the proper steps and take precautions to avoid potential risks. If you have any concerns or underlying skin conditions, consulting a dermatologist before starting microneedling at home is advisable.
